It was cumbersome, slow, and unforgiving, and you had to have really good pre-production.
Our two areas of video production, Live Production and Production/Post-Production, were previously separated (and now synergistic).
The first big production project was a promo for Borger, Texas. (We still have a copy of that project.) Our first big live production was the Colorado State Marching Band Championships in 1989 at the Mile High Stadium. We have been doing those championships ever since, and it has surely grown over the years – from simple SD to full HD, from VHS tapes to Blu-ray discs.
In 1993, we moved into our first office and got our first nonlinear editing system, The Video Cube. It was really slick and in-demand all over town. We have had many systems since then and just kept growing, but The Video Cube, serial #0004, allowed us to jump over the need for expensive linear editing equipment. It allowed us to be on the cutting edge of the video production world, where we have been ever since.
Eventually, we switched to HD. It seemed like an overnight transition and required us to purchase almost everything new (barring our tripods, camera boom and Steadicam). It also marked the end of tape-based recording and made everything go digital. We're sure you're familiar with the common challenge of, "where do I store all those 0s and 1s." It isn't megabytes or gigabytes anymore; it's all about terabytes now.
The formats change and the recording media changes but we have always delivered the best in customer service and excellence in production as individuals and as a solid team.
